Subject:Taisho/Showa Painting - unknown artist
Posted By: J. Boussinesq Mon, Feb 19, 2018 IP: 2602:306:36e0:2500:d

In my continual searching, I have recently come across several paintings by the same artist, one reproduced here. It is well executed and was found with several 1930s Japanese woodblocks, but I can't date the piece or identify the artist. Any assistance would be appreciated.

And Bob Dylan is still waiting for I. Nagy to come over and claim his Nobel.

The signature and seal both read 月峰 or 'Tsukimine' but I found no further info on this artist.

The girl is the 'Wisteria maiden' (Fuji musume), a standard subject of 'otsu-e' but rendered here in the Nihonga style' .

Thank you Guy. I suppose it is just one more commercial artist whose identity is lost to history.

I rather would read the signature and seal,
月峰 - Geppō
The situation is that the available informations on shin-hanga and sōsaku-hanga artists are very scarce.
We expect a biographical dictionary to come out in
2 -3 years from now (at Tokyo Hanga-dō)

With regards,
I.Nagy

I agree with Nagy's reading and pronuncation of the artist's name in the Sino-Japanese manner as 'Geppô'.

I was wondering if you ever found out any more information on this artist? I think that I have two additional prints from the same artist. I tried to get help at the link below. It seems that the signature and seal are both 月峰, so either "Geppō" or "Tsukimine" if the artist is Japanese. The dress of the women in my prints appears to be Chinese. Thanks!
