Posted By: Bill H Tue, Mar 27, 2018 The original pattern, called a "Sweetpea Scroll", was a popular Mainland export to Southeast Asia during the Daoguang period (1821-50), when Chinese population centers there experienced an emigration surge from China (related to the Opium Wars if memory serves). In my opinion, the double-happiness character was a late 19th or early 20th century addition. |
