Subject:Qing Guangxu marked small bowl
Posted By: RobT Thu, Mar 01, 2018 IP: 120.29.49.207

Hi, here is another piece from a small collection my father purchased at an Estate Auction in the mid 1950’s. I have the auction receipt. The previous owner, who had been a friend of my fathers, had been a missionary in China late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Once this is posted I will add photos of the other two panels. My questions are, is this an authentic Guangxu reign bowl or is it a reproduction. Many thanks to all the wonderful experts who assist on this forum. Rob

The mark, decoration, glazing and potting on your bowl all appear to me to be consistent with late 19th century Guangxu-period "minyao" (popular kiln) production.

Your pattern has circular reserves depicting precious antique vases and other auspicious objects within a melon scroll field, with "Lei" (lightning) fret around the top rim and crashing ocean waves at the bottom.

A pattern variation with the same melon scroll and lei fret with four reserves containing stylized characters reading "Long Life without Bounds" (A.K.A. the Birthday Pattern) also was quite popular during the late 19th century. I don't have one with the red ground, but can show you one in blue (photos below).

Best regards,

Bill H.
