Subject:Help to identify this jug !!!!! ( Iznik )
Posted By: Giuseppe Mon, Mar 05, 2018 IP: 85.228.90.34 I bought this jug some time ago. The shape is very similar to an Iznik jug but the design is archaic and poor. Can someone help me identify it? |

Posted By: Mat Tue, Mar 06, 2018 I think this is a "Birnkrug", likely from Siebenbürgen. |

Posted By: Robert Tue, Mar 06, 2018 Can't say for sure but the stylized floral and geometric decoration looks a lot like Italian tin glazed pottery (maiolica) from the 14th century. So, a very early proto-maiolica ware. But those ewers/pitchers generally had flaring bases and pinched mouths for pouring. I'm guessing that this same style of ware was also made in Islamic lands including Turkey having been spread by trade. The decorative style, however, is not classical Iznik. |
