Subject:Signature Identification on Chinese painting
Posted By: M Miller Mon, Mar 05, 2018 IP: 2601:645:500:2c0d:7d

I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify who the artist is. Either my great grandfather or my grandfather brought this painting back from China sometime between the late 1800's through 1949. They were both doing missionary work in China during those years. I will post an image of the full painting under this post. Thanks for taking a look!

Can you post the painting itself?

Yes, sorry about the delay in posting the full painting image. I couldn't find the original post to reply to.

The painting looks very fine in detail and artistry. It is in good condition and nicely framed.

I will post some closeup detail pics, as well.

Thank you for taking a look at them.

Reading and translation of inscription in my interpretation,
法相倶忘年次 - Image of Buddha causes to forget
the passage of years
癸酉榴月冩於北平 - Year of Water-Cock (...1873,1933...) May (Lunar calendar) in Peiping
(Peking)
Upper seal,
映雲 - Yingyun - Art-name of painter
Lower seal,
昊辛 - Hao Xin - Name and courtesy name of painter
(I am not very sure with the reading of the second character)
Leisure seal,
沈韵至吟 - Profound rhymes make songs

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you so much, I.Nagy !

That is beautiful that the hermit in the picture says "Image of Buddha causes to forget
the passage of years".

I think the lower seal is something like 吴之章 or 吴之印, because the painter seems to be a Republic era artist surnamed 吴, so the date is May 1933. Another painting by the same artist, identified as 吴映雲, is here, the painting is a bit more mannered following the "beautiful woman" trope of the time, but the inscription unmistakably by the same neat hand: http://shuhua.cang.com/1750867.html

The seller seems located in Los Angeles.

So this lohan painting is quite nice, by a minor but pretty fastidious artist.

Thank you so much for the extra details!

Very interesting. And the link to another painting by the artist.

I am interested in selling the painting and wonder if there is a reputable auction house that I should send the photos to. I'm not sure if the painting is worth anything, but I would prefer someone have it so it can be enjoyed. I don't have a suitable place to hang it.
