Subject:Unknown mark on very large set of export china
Posted By: Jaime Tue, May 08, 2018 IP: 2605:e000:1314:21c8:

Hello:
I have a large set (a little over 100 pieces) of export china I would like to know more about. They have a central dragon roundel and what I perceive to be a square shop mark. I believe they are late 19th-20th century. Are they Chinese or Japanese? Does anyone know what the mark indicates?
As always...many thanks!!!!

Japanese Hizen-yaki or Arita ware painted in the Imari palette. Late Meiji period. Mark is 冨, tomi in Japanese, meaning wealth.

Your dishes are Japanese Imari-style, marked "Fuku" (富 - Good Fortune). The forum's Japanese experts would be better sources of dating information for the set. Any provenance?

Best regards,

Bill H.

I skipped class during my Japanese lessons once too often. TD has the correct transliteration on this character, thank goodness.

These are Japanese imari made at Arita. Probably late Meiji (c.1900).
