Subject:Help Identifying Chinese Bowl

My father in law purchased this bowl in China about 25 years ago. Any idea what it is? Thanks.

Crackle-glazed porcelains with faux bronze applications and apocryphal base-marks of the Ming Chenghua emperor, like what's found on this censer, are associated with the Qing Guangxu reign (1875-1908). There appears to be a fragment of a Shanghai Customs inspection seal or "Jianding" next to the seal (both are flipped 90-degrees right of proper reading position).

This is the first censer I've seen with the crackle glaze and faux bronze embellishments, and since I haven't seen it all, I suppose this piece might be period. However, my gut says early Republic era (1912-49) would be a safer guess, as I seem to recollect that some Republic stuff was still being cleared for export by China when your father bought the item.

Best regards,

Bill H.
