Subject:Name on Japanese pottery mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Wed, Jun 13, 2018 IP: 84.26.216.123

A long while ago I found this Satsuma pottery mark of Hododa (Hotoda / Hodota). Up until now I'm still not able to decipher the name of the painter in the left column.
The mark says: Hododa Zo - Satsuma Yaki - ?? ?? Ga.
The question marks form the name of the painter (Ga = Painted by), but which name ??? Although I normally try to solve these problems myself, I need some assistance with this.

I'm sorry for not having the piece itself displayed, I collect only the Japanese pottery marks, not the pieces on which they stand.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Martin.

Martin, the name in that stack on the left side looks to me like 悦眞/悦真 (this shows both of the two variants), but I defer to you to settle on the transliteration. This would mean "Truly pleasing". Another, more remote possibility might be 悦貴, with a meaning of "Pleased and honored".

I tried to fish something related to Satsuma out of Google but drew blanks with both possibilities.

Good luck,

Bill H.

Hi, Martin,
The characters could be 悅真画.

Bill H. and TD,
Thanks for helping me.
You both came up with 悦 as the first character: "Etsu" (ON translation).
The second character might be 眞 or 真, both meaning "Shin" (ON translation) or "Ma" (KUN translation).
That leaves as a name: Etsushin or Etsuma, both Romanji names in the Japanese Kanji Name Dictionary:
http://www.hipenpal.com/tool/japanese_names_search_and_converter_in_english.php
Since one can enter also Japanese names in Kanji, I tried both combinations: the combination 悦眞 gives no result, the combination 悦真 give 1 result: Etsuma (first name male).
And indeed, like Bill wrote, no matches found about Etsuma or Etsushin in relation with Satsuma, Hododa, Ga, Sei o Zo, not in English nor in Japanese.
So I'm going to use that Etsuma name in my Marks Catalog.
Thanks again,
Martin.
