Subject:Japanese Silk Scroll ID
Posted By: David Fri, Jul 26, 2019 IP: 70.16.192.35

My grandfather brought this back from Japan after WWII. I don't know anything about it and was hoping for some help identifying the artist and the date. I'm also curious about the apparent halo around the woman's head. Thank you in advance.

天主聖母為我等祈 - Mother of God Pray for us
Signature、
子羚般繪 - Picture of Ziling (Lamb of God) Ban
Seal,
子 x The second character is incomprehensible to me

It was about a week ago I read the signature calligraphy mistakenly from John's posting.
On your picture the calligraphy is more legible.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you, Nagy and Bill! I have gone from believing I had a Japanese scroll to learning it is Chinese with a title, artist name, and approximate date.

Thanks again.

David

It occurs to me a closeup of the seal might be beneficial.

Thank you for the enlarged picture.
The first character (right side) is 子. The second character is too much individually designed - I interpret it as 3 羊 "sheep" side by side configurating the character 羚 .
The word 子羚 - Lamb of God - is used in religious text only.

With regards,
I.Nagy
