Subject:HELP WITH IDENTIFYING ARTWORK
Posted By: Tue, Jan 17, 2012 IP: 80.42.168.234

I would be grateful if anyone can shed some light on a framed pen & ink drawing on rice paper which I found in a junk shop. It is obviously old, possibly c.1900 and has a label on the back of the frame saying 'Staples, dealers in fine art, Bromley'. The subject appears to be a male bearded figure, seated under palm trees. There are Japanese/Chinese (forgive my ignorance) characters by one of the trees and a stamp in the bottom left-hand corner, also with similar characters. Although it is not the most attractive of pictures, it is obviously finely painted. I am intrigued by the picture and would be very interested to find out more about it. Thanks for any opinions received.

this looks like a 1920-1940 era reproduction (lithograph?) of a Chinese painting by who, Wu Sheng maybe? no, must be someone else I don't recognize. the cyclical year is most likely 1924; the inscription by the painter dedicates the painting to a friend on his birthday and wishes this person long life

Many thanks for taking the time to look at my picture. The translation of the inscription was interesting. and the date was useful. I wonder who the subject is supposed to be?

sorry not be clearer with the inscription but I dont have a lot of time. the figure is hard to see from your photo but might be a lohan (luohan) under a tree. For an example of what I mean look for Zhao Mengfu Red-robed monk Liaoning museum. http://www.chinaonlinemuseum.com/painting-zhao-mengfu-monk-in-a-red-robe.php

Thank you for taking the trouble to send some additional information relating to my query. I have followed your suggested link and agree that there is a distinct similarity between the robed figure in my picture and the Lohan illustrated. I now feel I have something on which to base my research and will hopefully be able to investigate it a little further.

Thanks once again - Carolyn T
