Subject:Roof tile
Posted By: Sun, Apr 22, 2012 IP: 24.91.192.94

hello,
Could anyone provide more info on this rooftile?
It has five-fingered dragon; yellow glazed, half glazed on back.
Thanks in advance

The clay and glaze appear to be consistent with what I've seen on products of the Shiwan kiln complex in the Guangzhou (former Canton) suburbs. Its age may not be great, as the lack of mortar traces on the backside suggests it has never actually been used. Tiles such as this were produced in great numbers from the late 1940's onward on the China mainland and Taiwan to facilitate the reconstruction of old monuments destroyed in World War II, as well as for sale to tourists. Monumental new construction of memorials to Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek on Taiwan also required huge numbers of new tiles. An example of a modern Shiwan-style tile acquired in Taipei in the mid-1980's is shown below.

Best regards,

Bill H.
