Subject:Wondering what this statue is and its value

Hello,

I have an Asian statue that I purchased a few years back at a store that sells antiques. I knew nothing about it at that time except that I liked it. Before selling it I first wanted to know what it is that I am selling and its value. And where to sell it.

Here is a little information about the statue. The statue seems to be carved out of wood because when I look at the bottom I can see the grain. There are also cracks like a piece of wood. It could be covered in some sort of plaster because as you can see from the photos, there are chips broken off. The plaster or paint has layers of black, red and gold. It stands about 18 inches high and is about 7 inches at its widest point and 7 inches at its deepest point.

Unfortunately the pictures I just tried to load are too big and my computer savvy husband is sleeping. I added the three that are small enough but they also are poor. If it is possible to e-mail me direct then I can send the larger, better pictures.

The plaster material is called gesso and was used to give wood a more permanant coating that would take being painted better than wood, would (!!)

..../ Yours looks pretty genuine and of good age, would need better pictures to be sure, as there are so many good fakes about... In fact one guy on youtube is shown proudly displaying his shops new fake!! Really you are best off taking to a specialist or perhaps your nearest museum with an asian dept. just phone in advance for an appointment... Good luck

Thank you so much for the feed back! I have invested a bit of time into contacting dealers/appraisers in the effort to find someone who can look at it, identify it and value it. There has been either been a response telling me that they cannot help or no response at all. Can you pass on a trusted recommendation? I do not mind paying for the service if I can just locate someone who has the knowledge and offers it! We are in rural Whitefish, Montana and there are mostly cowboys in these parts, (or close to it!)
