Posted By: John Degiacomo Wed, Feb 13, 2013 IP: 96.246.120.174

Hey guys... Just need a little help identifying a mark on a Satsuma charger I have. Seems to be great quality. Has a 9 symbol gold on black mark as well as a small impress mark (hard to see in photos, sorry). Attached are a few pics.. Thanks in advance.. ~ John

Without reading japanese I would say its a shimazu mark-possibly nambe.
With a few noticable exceptions with Satsuma you are best concentrating on the quality of the piece rather than the name.
eg Kozan made some bits now worth £50, however his "imperial" quality can be worth £10,000
That said, this looks a nice detailed piece

The gilt mark reads down in three stacks from the right as: Imperial Japan(大日本 - Dai Ni Hon or Dai Nippon), Satsuma Ware (薩摩焼 - Satsuma Yaki), Made by Kinshu Garden (錦秀園製 - Kinshu En Sei). (NOTE: My transcriptions may not be completely standard.)

The impressed mark is rotated more than 90-degrees to the left of proper reading position. All I can make out by enhancing the photo is the first character, which means "Longevity" (壽), commonly pronounced "Ju" or "Shu" in Japanese.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Quality indeed - an earlier export piece I think (1880s-90s), with the mark (read from the right to the left) "Dai Nippon - Satsuma yaki - Kinshuen saku" (Great Japan/Satsuma ware/made by Kinshuen' (decorator Kinshuen Motonobu).

Guy.
