Subject:Help with signature on vintage Tiger Painting on Silk Please
Posted By: zoey Sun, Apr 21, 2013 IP: 173.33.48.6

Hi again, I have a lovely pair of old tiger paintings, painted on silk. I assume they are Chinese. Probably just tourist pieces but I would love to know if the signatures can be read by any of you experts. Any and all comments welcome with thanks...

Possibly Japanese work. I am unable to tell if your work is original.

Keyword: 陽石虎

URL Title :Japanese Tiger Scroll

thanks for the link but I am still mystified. I can see the resemblance of the red chop in the tiger scroll pictured. Is the red chop the symbol for Yamato? Is that an area in Japan or an artist? Sorry for my extreme ignorance. I assume the black characters are the artists name, can they be deciphered? The pieces are definitely old anywhere from 1900-1940 I think. thanks for any more help or suggestions!

In Japanese, the artist's name "陽石" is pronounced as Yōseki (or Youseki). And yes, for your scroll, the black characters and the red seal are the same name. Good luck with it.

If i could get help with this too I’d greatly appreciate it.. i think it might be Chinese and influenced from the Tang Dynasty

This is a 20th century painting, the artist using the name 吴月, Wu Yue in Chinese. I'm not sure what you mean by Tang influence, there are few paintings of tigers that survive from China's imperial era (there are some lions though), let alone Tang. They are more common in Japanese and particularly Korean art.

both the black signature on your painting and the red seal read the same thing: "yang shi" in Chinese, and maybe "Yoseki" or "Yoshaku" in Japanese. yamato... is just the name of a website with YEWong found a similar picture. but I am not sure whether the artist of YEWong's picture is the same as the artist of yours.

thanks so much! So if I understand correctly the paintings could be either Japanese or Chinese in origin? I did find a reference to a Chinese painter Yang Shanshen but that is the closest name I found. thanks again!

yes, sorry not to be clearer on national origin, but tigers were popular subjects in both. Your painter is not Yang Shanshen though.
