Subject:Qianlong M&P - is this imperial ware???
Posted By: Corey Thu, Nov 13, 2014 IP: 87.48.138.98

So there was this auction in Houston recently with a nice celadon archaistic hu shaped vase, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, estimated at $6000 - 8000! I have an identical one in my selection of chinese ceramics. My question is if this could be considered imperial ware?

Had your vase borne a resemblance to one sold by the Marchant Auction House in London, you'd have a much greater chance of a positive reply to your query, in my humble opinion.

It's identical to one sold by Marchant Auction House in the USA and bears resemblance to pieces sold by Christie's and Sotheby's as you can see in the links I have posted.

Attempting to compare items sold by a regional auction house with those vetted by one of the great international auction houses is futile. Many of these regional houses don't really sell such pieces but simply show them as sold at their unannounced reserve price. If all the Houston auctioneer got for the vase was the posted three grand, it doesn't hold a candle to the US$110,900.63 Sotheby's netted for the one sold in Hong Kong (which was the only working link I found from you). In other words, better keep your day job for now.

Best regards,

Bill H.

In my opinon both the celadon glaze, the archaistic hu form, the archaistic relief decoration and not least the molded sealmark of Qianlong is very comparable with the pieces sold by Christie's and Sotheby's. Yes, it's true that the Houston vase sold for only $3000 via liveauctioneers and I still regret I didn't bid on it to get the pair. This is a high quality antique chinese mark and period porcelain vase in a specific style that was introduced during the reign of Qianlong.

Thought I would add a couple more links to this old thread. Really the 3K salesprice does not say much about the true value of these vases. There was another mark and period vase sold by the same auction house that was nearly identical to one at the met! And although I'm not sure, I would guesstimate the true value of that one to be considerably higher than the 5,5K sale price or for that sake the 8K high estimate.

Just adding a note to myself. I spend days searching through the major museums online collections to see if I could find a similar shaped vase with the exact proportions, only to learn that it had been standing right in front of me all the time at the National Museum of Denmark here in Copenhagen, dressed in a uniform dark blue body and a white ribbon around its neck. Then a similar one to that was available at the Marchant january sales, but with a different kind of decoration, Qianlong mark and period, estimated at 6,000 - 8,000 USD. It sold for 240,000.000 USD!

Leaving a further note to myself as I recently came across a similar shaped vase, mark and period of Yongzheng, estimated at RMB 9,000,000 at Macau CITIC International Auction Co., Ltd:

And then finally just yesterday I found an example of an unmarked Qianlong period octogonal celadon vase carved with a archaistic relief decoration that resembles the design of my vase perfectly, estimated at RMB 600,000-800,000:

http://auction.artxun.com/paimai-115107-575532262.shtml

Add a Qianlong seal mark to the base and the value increases 5-10 times. But all in all this corresponds well with my own idea of an appraisal of my vase at roughly 1 million dollars. I'll definitely contact one of the major English houses with this one.

I also find it very interesting how the shape of the unmarked Qianlong period octogonal celadon vase compares with a very high value partly celadon glazed octogonal vase, mark and period of Qianlong, sold at Sotheby's in 2015:

Strangely I have somehow overlooked this Jiaqing mark and period soft paste vase sold at Sotheby's in Paris 2012:

http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2012/arts-dasie-pf1207/lot.71.html

Interesting how the decoration closely resembles with the 'unmarked Qianlong period octogonal celadon vase' sold at the paimai auction house. Unfortunately the auction.artxun site with the image of that one has been closed. And the computer where I had a copy has crashed. Waiting for the spare parts to be shipped from Hong Kong ... Frustrating!
