Message Hi Bruce, Not Japanese but Chinese. Certainly not unusual because they still make such ware today and it is sold in warehouses for a few euros. The pattern is mostly called the rice grain pattern and and they started to make it in the second half of the 19th. century as a kind of revival of the older (late Ming) Linglung pieces. Because they made/make it for such a long time it is a bit hard to date. Yours is probably transferprinted and not older than the second quarter of the 20th, century. The mark reads "Wanyu".
