BEAUTIFUL RED CHINESE VASE WITH STAMP MARK "SWASTIKA" SYMBOL |
Posted By: rat Posted Date: May 10, 2013 (11:17 AM) |
Message This is a common Qianlong mark; the piece seems of good quality but I can't say that it dates to that period. the symbol in the upper left of the mark that vaguely resembles a busy swastika is an archaic form of the character for "year", meaning "reign period" in this case. Chinese art does include swastikas, which arrived in China from India in association with Buddhism. But this is not an example of one. Note that the arms of Buddhist swastikas go in opposite directions from those developed to represent Nazism in Germany. Post a Response |
