I would like to know the origin/history regarding the carving technique for this plus-40 year old piece. I do not know what kind of wood this is; possibly boxwood? I have included the back side of this work to perhaps help decipher the wood type; it is heavy and about one inch thickness. My research has narrowed down to the possibility of Zhangzhou (Chaozhou folk art)wood carvers and/or Dongyang wood carvers. Chaozhou wood carvers tend to portray the daily life of laboring people; and they were known for using multi level carved sculpturing as well as relief carving. There are Chinese letters on the bridge the man riding the donkey is crossing - perhaps the name of the bridge? There is Chinese letters in another area; however I have not included that photo due to photo restrictions of three! I look forward to learning about this piece. Thank you.
