Re: Japanese relief clay glaze vase |

Message That item would be a "Grotto Vase", grottoes being a favorite place for disciples of Zen, the meditative form of Buddhism, to retire to for their contemplations. I believe they've probably always had a niche in Buddhist art, but a lot of them came home with military personnel who went to Asia for World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, courtesy of well-stocked curio shelves in military exchange stores around the region.
