Peaceful Wind

10. Vishnu with Lakshmi and Garuda
India
ca. 900
bronze
10 1/4 inches tall
Vishnu with Lakshmi and Garuda

This extraordinary sculpture was probably excavated and then cleaned, which explains the odd patina, and the damage to the halo in the upper left. The style is unusual and does not correspond exactly to the Pala conventions of Bihar and western Bengal nor to the eastern Bengal Pala types. The slim elegant figure of Vishnu contrasts with the flowing, languorous figures of Garuda on the right and Laksmi on the left. The overall wear is either the result of worship prior to the sculpture's burial or possibly as a result of being buried. Despite the overall wear some details of very fine workmanship are still clearly visible, such as the two earrings of the god, one depicting a duck and the other a makara.
