This a fine example of papier and cloth mache mask from Tibet. In both Tibet and Bhutan the mache process was popular. The masks were built up of the flexible wet material on some sort of form or mould, likely of wood, and then finished and painted. This mask portrays one of the forms of the great protector Mahakala, who has an important role to play in almost very Himalayan Buddhist ritual. |
