This work was inspired by the 12th- 13th century thangka of Vajravarahi. I painted a miniature version of the thangka on one side and next to it I painted a very enlarged detail of the hand – the fingers holding the skull-cup.
The piece reflects Buddhist approach towards the relation between the smallest particle and the universal. Our mind can have a similar approach.
The painting is slightly blurred. An artist might have a clear vision of what he wishes to create but when he acts on this vision the result might become ‘blurred’. There is a certain distance between the reality and what we perceive as such.
The contrast between the two sides of the paintings reflects the Buddhist concept of emptiness/void. Also, it represents what we feel very strongly about but are unable to express.
