8. Underpants
Liao dynasty (907-1125)
Underpants

This pair of underpants made of silk tabby have a triangular shape. Their full length is about 70 centimetres, of which the waist composes 10 centimetres; the width is about 64 centimetres in the waist. Two silk ribbons, each 4.5 centimetres wide and 65 centimetres long, at one side of the waist, were used to secure the pants. The pants have a very unusual style of openings, with slits exposing the legs at both sides.

Very few undergarments have been found in Liao tombs, the only two examples being from Daiqintala (Xin’anmen, Inner Mongolia). They have exactly the same style as the present pair, and the tomb also has a pair pants with long legs and connected socks, which might have been intended for wearing over the short pants.
