The deity, whose name translates to “Fair Wind Ears” is one of two demonic subordinates of T’ien Hou Sheng Mu – the Empress of Heaven, a popular religious tutelary goddess for seafarers and their families. Shun Feng Er’s role is to listen for storms and bad weather, and this small but expressive figure is seen cocking his head to one side to listen. The image is not only well carved, but is finely painted in rich colour and lavishly gilded with raised lacquer embellishment.
