8. An ornamental silver box in the form of a recumbent deer
Chinese for the Cambodian market
early 20th Century
Length: 3" (8cm)
An ornamental silver box in the form of a recumbent deer

The box is worked in high relief in repousse, the deer's body curled around, his legs drawn up, his head, with its ruby eyes and mossy antlers. The surface of the figure is entirely covered with repousse flowers and foliate designs. Marked with a Chinese character 'IN' and 'T90%' to the base, indicating a high silver content.

Boxes such as these were collected by the Cambodian nobility, and were considered charming gifts.
