Tibet
early 20th Century
Size: 33 ¾”x59” (85.5 x 150 cm)
A sleeping rug (Khaden)

The handsome khaden with a striking design of 3 cartouches depicting Manchurian cranes – the symbol of a first rank mandarin in the Chinese culture, from which many Tibetan designs evolved, on a dark vegetable blue ground, bordered within wide bands of light blue with auspicious symbols. Flowers and auspicious symbols also decorate the field, in shades of vegetable greens, camel and yellow, while the field is cornered by stylised bats. A non vegetal red is the clue to the dating.
