Gurung or Magar mask
Middle Hills, Nepal,
17th/ 18th century (?).
Wood, grass, nails
height 26cm (10 1/2").
This character is sometimes thought to be a joker, however we cannot be certain that these
masks did not have different identities and ritual functions at the time of their creation,
changing with the popular culture over time.
Mort Golub Collection.
