Funerary couple
Liao Dynasty (946 to 1125)
H: 50 cm
Painted cypress wood

Each figure is carved in one piece of wood. Very expressive faces finely carved.

The man has a small beard and wears a hat, a long robe with long sleeves and a belt. The women wears a long coat with very long sleeves over a pleated skirt.

The surface is plain with traces of cloth and small roots. The figures were probably dressed.

Funerary figures from Liao Dynasty although documented in various archaeological reports are very rare. Similar figures were excavated in a Liao tomb in Daxing County (Hebei province) in 1979 (ref: Wenwu No.12, 1980).
