Turning prayer wheels on the nangkor, inside the Jokhang Temple
November 1997

Always moving in the clockwise direction and often spinning prayer wheels, worshipers circle the inner sanctum of the Jokhang on a sacred path known as the nangkor. Three koras emanate from the Jokhang and its central icon, the Jowo, a statue of the Buddha: the innermost, the nangkor, is fully inside the temple; the next, the barkhor (or simply kora) circles the entire Jokhang temple; the outermost, the lingkor, circles the sacred city of Lhasa.
