Detail:
Nagae Shigekazu is one of the most innovative and widely appreciated ceramic artists working today. His work has been exhibited throughout Japan and in Europe and America and has been featured in a number of publications, including Leaders of Contemporary Ceramics, a recent exhibition at the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum. He is celebrated both for his graceful forms and his totally original technique.

Nagae calls his new technique otoshikomi, dripping, which he achieves by dripping small amounts of porcelain slip into molds in stages, producing an effect reminiscent of Jackson Pollack. His dripped forms are then allowed to warp, in a controlled fashion, in the kiln, producing wonderful organic shapes and highly individualistic designs.
