16. Linga, Symbol of Shiva
Nepal
11th century
Bronze
Object 12, (gallery B, case 2, B-10)

Shiva Linga As an unadorned column this linga emerges from a lotus supported on a double-headed drum-shaped base with multiple mouldings. The triangular projection is to drain liquids such as milk or honey used to reverently bathe the linga. This linga closely resembles a privately-owned Nepalese bronze linga inscribed and dated A.D. 1045 and is likely of the same approximate date.
