Subject:A request to identify the author
Posted By: Anastasia Tue, Apr 22, 2025 IP: 95.153.163.240

This is a picture admittedly belonging to an unknown Japanese or Chinese painter of the end of the 19-th century.  My relative received it as a gift from Chiang Kai-shek himself in China in the 30-s of the 20th century. It is a sample of reverse glass painting with the author’s stamp. May be somebody can say who the author is. I would be very thankful for any information about the picture.

Lower seal,
日垣明貫 - Higaki Myōkan

I cannot read the upper, so-called leisure seal with the artist's motto at first sight.

Higaki Myōkan 日垣明貫 1912-?
He was a painter in the Kansai region.
I can't find any biographical information on the Japanese-language web. More of his works can be found on Yahoo and Aucfan sites.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you so much for your reply. What about the pointed year 1912? Is it the year of his birth? Are his other works also made on glass?
Can it help if I make more detailed photo of the upper seal?
Best wishes,
Anastasia

A little known painter.
1912 was his year of birth, his year of death is unknown.
As I am in Europe during the spring and summer months I am also cut off from my handbook library in Japan, and also from internet access to Yahoo an Aucfan sites (not available in Europe - don't know about America) where several of the artist's pictures are uploaded for auctions.
I don't ask for pictures of the top seal, a lot of wasted work for nothing. Knowing the artist's motto wouldn't get us any closer to knowing anything more about him.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I.Nagy,

if now you are in Japan, maybe you can have some more information about this painter - Higaki Myōkan 日垣明貫. I tried to contact one or two Japanese museums with the request to identify the author or to get the contacts of his relatives but they gave neutral uninformative answers only.
Best wishes,
Anastasia
