Subject:Jadeite Carving (wood base needs repair)
Posted By: Will Mon, Apr 28, 2025 IP: 76.100.102.26

Hello, good day,

I have collected a number of jade carvings. They are large decorative pieces carved in Shanghai ca. 1990s. Some of the wood bases are badly scratched and I would like to do something to improve the appearance. The current finishes are a glossy dark reddish brown.

Could anyone recommend options for how to do such a repair?
1 or 2?

1:
Chinese Furniture Woodworker:
I could UPS the wood base to someone who can do this for a reasonable cost.

2:
DIY Re-Finish (1990s glossy dark reddish brown):
From what source can I purchase such a finish product?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

warm regards,
Will

Hello Renato,

DIY Re-finish:
I would like to know how I could purchase a small quantity (e.g., 6 fl oz) of finish product that would match each of the damaged pedestals.

Pay Someone Re-finish:
If they have some experience with such finishes.

Each of the pedestals has a different finish.

1 - Black Semi Gloss
2 - Red Brown Glossy Semi Translucent
3 - Red Brown Glossy

I was hoping that it is possible to match one or more of the pedestal finishes. Of course I will test on the underside of pedestals before applying to areas that I seek to repair/improve.

Thank you for any assist.

Will
