Posted By: Frédéric S. Wed, Apr 30, 2025 IP: 176.130.20.28

Hi,
Could you help me identify this ancient Chinese or Japanese book? There are glued strips of paper covered in calligraphy.
All information is welcome.
THANKS.
Frédéric S.

This is a reproduction of a Chinese epitaph dating from 532CE that discusses the life of a Northern Wei ruler, Yuan Yanming, who died in 530. As described in the Chinese website below, the stone epitaph from which this or the rubbing that it reproduces was excavated in 1919 and is now in the Henan provincial museum. It is preserved not so much for the content of the epitaph but as an example to emulate of the calligraphic style of the time.

This is a Chinese book with rubbings glued in.
魏文宣元王墓誌
石卿訂
Tomb insription of Prince Wenxuanyuan* of the Wei Dynasty
Stapled together by Master Shiqing

*Yuan Yanming 元延明 of the Northern Wei Dynasty, served as Minister, Grand Secretary,Governor of Yong, Hua and Qing prefectures, Prince of Wenxuanyuan etc.
This stele was erected in 532 and unearthed in Luoyang in 1919. There are several rubbings of the stele, this is one of them.It can be stated with certainty that this rubbing was made after 1919.

With regards,
I.Nagy
