Subject:Chinese Ink Paintings
Posted By: stargazer Fri, May 09, 2025 IP: 124.188.155.107

Hello! I fell in love with Chinese ink paintings a few years ago and have been collecting them ever since. I would love to know the artists who painted some of them.
Would anyone be generous enough to help me identify the artists?
I've attached images of the seals, unfortunately they're quite low resolution - if these are unusable I will try to come back with better pictures.

Thank you so much!

Dear Stargazer,
Seal imprints only are not sufficient to identify the vast majority of painters. A full colophon (date, signature and seal) may be of some help in the case of recognised painters. For example, one of the largest dictionaries of Chinese painters (中國美術家人名辞典、上海1985) lists more than 1,000 recognized painters with the surname Cheng.

P.1,
...寫意 Freehand brushwork of .....
Seal,
碔 Wu - Could be a given name or art-name

P.2,
....陳 ....Chen - Surname
Upper seal,
陳氏 - Master Chen
Lower (Leisure) seal,
Imprint not clear enough to decipher
(With the motto or catchphhrase of the painter)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Corrigenda,
...painters with the surname Chen. - is correct.

Thank you so much I.Nagy, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! You're very generous.

Is it common for paintings to be simply impossible to identify?

The population of people in China who practice painting is several times higher than in western societies. Even at this moment there are thousands of people engaged in some level of painting - not to mention the several times larger number of the skilled amateurs. Aspring painters and amateurs alike have their seals engraved, including their names (surname, given name, pseudonym) leisure seals, corner seals etc.
The name of the selected painters, who have been selected for exhibitions from various regional to national levels will appear printed or on the Chinese-language websites for the first time (with limited number of reference works, seal imprints etc.)
To identify less famous contemporary artists is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Without showing the full colophons of your paintings, there is no further to go. But even knowing them does not mean that they are identifiable.
You can get an idea of the likelihood of identifications by looking back at least a good six months of the responses to inquiries by me or others on this forum.

With fregards,
I.Nagy
