Subject:Trying to identify and value these vases
Posted By: Mike Zaidan Sun, May 11, 2025 IP: 69.157.145.16

These 2 Vases we acquired by my Grandmother in Egypt from the Estate of King Farouk. She thought they were Mongolian although I'm quite sure they're Japanese. Each vase has a stand and a top piece and is 47" in total (the top pieces it in the vases to a degree). The stands are 8" the Vases 36" And the top pieces 13". There are some cracks in the top (fixed) but overall the pieces are in excellent shape (I think).

Mike, you are correct; the vases are Japanese. They were made during the Meiji Restoration when Japan was “re-opened” to the western world. The style is called “Satsuma” after the province where it is believed to have originated. The bodies of the vases are glazed earthenware, which were then decorated with overglaze enamel colors/pigments and gilding. Your vases are special both for their complexity and size. They could have been made (most likely circa the 1890s) for an important exhibition such as a world’s fair, or as a gift to a foreign dignitary. A translation of the mark may better inform us when and why they were made. However, they would not have been made for Farouk I, since he was only born in 1920, although he may have acquired them later. IMO, they deserve to be professionally restored.

Thank you so much for all the information. I agree that they should be restored. They're quite unique and beautiful. My parents need me to sell them but I have no idea how to value them or who to sell them to. I'm in Montreal, Quebec. I am trying to avoid putting them on Facebook Marketplace.

Mike,

Here is a link to an international auction house based in Canada that specializes in Asian art. Their website lists an office in Montreal. Perhaps you could contact them.

Good luck.

Robert
