Subject:Pls Help me identify these statues
Posted By: Michael Zaidan Tue, May 20, 2025 IP: 69.157.145.16

To be honest I'm not sure if these are even Chinese or Japanese. Two statues from my parents one (the dog) has an inscription (or signature) at the base. I don't know much more about them. My mother says they're very old and may have come from a temple?

Dear Michael Zaidan,
I am sorry to dissapoint your mother, but this cleary was made in a shop for turist.

The "dog" is called 石獅; shíshī, Chinese guardian lion.

Seated in the Lalitasana (royal ease posture) and wearing a crown with a tiered pagoda-like structure, along with other regalia, this figure clearly suggests Balinese origin. The abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness/protection) and the axe (parashu) held in one of the four hands could be strongly associated with Parashurama (an incarnation of Vishnu) or, in some contexts, with Shiva. While many might be astonished by such a spurious piece of work, I am not — after all, we all need to begin somewhere."

But please, show to your mother pieces of museum with Shishi and balinese hindu gods, to show her the strong differences with those. No temple in entire East could handle these two pieces, sorry.

Best regards,
Renato
