Subject:Nagasawa Rosetsu
Posted By: Martha Sun, May 25, 2025 IP: 79.46.130.137

Greetings to all. This drawing seems to have the signature of Nagasawa Rosetsu. On the back there is a long writing, can someone tell me, even briefly, what it is? Is it by the author? Is there a date? Many thanks for your attention and best regards,
Martha

Signature,
蘆雪寫 - Painted by Rosetsu
Seal,
魚 - Uo ‐ Original given name

Reading and translation of the text on the back,

Nagasawa Rosetsu
A native of the Yodo clan in the south of Kyoto, Became a disciple of Okyo where he studied and produced new style art works. His paintings are so precise that they are almost invisible to the naked eye.
His stylish paintings also astonished the public.
Okyo was a great authority on the subject.
Died on June 8,of the 11th Year of Kansei (1711), aged 45

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dropped from the beginning of the translation -
"Name Uo courtesy name Hyokei"
A native of Yodo clan .....

You are right.
The correct interpretation of the text.
(Born on)* June 8, of the 11th Year of Kansei (1711), Died in the Age of 45

* not indicated

Since the text is written in one word without separation and without marking the word birth, it only indicates the age at death by the word "death". So I automatically assumed that 1711 was the year of death, and that the painter was then 45 years old.

I. Nagy

Many thanks Mr. Nagy for your generous help. But isn't Rosetsu's death date 1799? Is it a mistake of the person who wrote the note? Best regards,
Martha
