Posted By: Roger Wed, May 28, 2025 IP: 71.205.135.53

Greetings All!
I would greatly appreciate your help reading the signature on this painting, and any other information on the painting as well. Sorry for the poor quality photos.
Thank you!

Dear Roger,

I hope someone can help better than I do. I'm not sure, but its looks like a student paint.
I do not know mandarim, but its seams to me is written something like:

"Paintedby Zhū Guī Càn [following] the master Mendao, Lay Buddhist transmitter of the fame" 門道子 (Mén Dàozǐ): "Master Mendao" 君章 (Jūn Zhāng) [its a formal signature]- 傳名居士朱珪燦寫 (Chuán Míng Jūshì Zhū Guī Càn Xiě)-"Lay Buddhist ‘Transmitter of Fame’" - this sounds to me like a religious title of the master's painter 朱珪燦 (Zhū Guī Càn) 寫 (Xiě) "painted by" Zhū Guī Càn .

Its just a begining,
Best regards,
Renato Araújo

There's a good bit of this I can't discern either (eg the seals would help with the painter's name for instance) but I think you are on the right track. As I read the inscription, the first line has the painter stating that the picture's style is inspired by Wu Daozi (吳)道子, the famous early figure painter whose work does not survive. Since we don't know what Wu Daozi's paintings looked like, this line doesn't convey any real information. The second line seems entirely focused on the painter's names, but I am not able to read some of it. Perhaps 績(X)居士朱端(浙?)寫. Stylistically I think the painting is trying to date between 1875-1935ish.
