Subject:Japanese presentation cane
Posted By: mikeoz Fri, Jun 06, 2025 IP: 60.227.230.181

This handsome cane is very finely carved with an image of an eagle about to consume a small monkey. It has an inscription for which I would appreciate an explanation.

日本國神戶楠前
曾奉乹命
岩木建春刀

In my interpretation,
日本國神戶楠前 - (In)Japan, Kobe,(at)Kusunoki-mae
曾奉乾命 - On respectfully accepted order
岩本建春刀 - Carved by Iwamoto Kenshun

Dear I Nagy,

Thank you for your help in explaining the inscription on my cane. Mr Iwamoto is a very accomplished carver. Could you please suggest where I might be able to find out more about him.

Best wishes

Mike Harty

Dear Mike,
I have been visiting Tokyo's antiquarian bookshops and bookstores for more than 50 years, but I have yet to come across a book on Japanese woodcarvers except of kokeshi doll makers.

With regards,
I.Nagy
