Subject:"Marker" Attached To The Bottom Of A Chinese Dish
Posted By: Bruce Sat, Jun 14, 2025 IP: 99.60.109.187

Please let me know if you recognize the marker that is attached to the bottom of this dish, I have never seen something like this on Chinese ceramic. It would appear to be ceramic or pottery and is attached by a metal pin. I did an online photo search with no luck.

Namaste,

Bruce

The "marker" attached to the bottom of the dish is the remaining piece of a customs wax-seal authorising the export.
The reading of the seal character remained intact:
鉴 Inspected
Above there was the name of the local customs office,
e.g. Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin etc.

Bottom marking reads,
同治年制 - Made During the Tongzhi Reign

With regards,
I.Nagy

further to I. Nagy's reply, there's additional information on these wax seals here: https://www.gotheborg.com/marks/jian_ding.shtml

Though much of your wax is now missing, the lower character seems to refer to the relevant permitting agency of Zhejiang Province (most of 浙, for Zhejiang, is visible still)

Awesome, thanks so much. I have collected quite a bit of older Chinese pottery and ceramics but never saw an export seal like this, with a pin holding it to the dish. Learning is half the fun of collecting.

Namaste,

Bruce
