Subject:Looking for help and reference material on this export plate
Posted By: Madria Sat, Jun 28, 2025 IP: 134.106.99.173

Dear forum,
I would like to once again enlist the help of experts and experienced individuals. I am looking for references to this Rose Canton plate from the mid-19th century. Does anyone know of similar pieces with sepia in the well and enamel colours on the rim? Does anyone recognise the rim pattern? How rare is this combination and are there any comparable examples? I would appreciate references in books and lists on websites. I would also be very grateful for any further information about the object itself. Thank you very much for your support!

Kind Regards

Madria

Your export plate can be dated to c.1835-45 by its rim design as depicted in David S. Howards "Chinese Armorial Porcelain" Vol.2 section 19th century. The central sepia-toned design is more commonly found to contain a village scene or landscape than the "GO" playing women on this plate. The poor depiction of the faces of the women is in stark contrast to some well painted 19th century examples and denotes a lower grade of production quality.
