Subject:A very New Cursive Challenge
Posted By: Renato Sun, Jun 29, 2025 IP: 177.140.12.187

Dear friends,

I am very proud to anounce I've just bought an ukio-e by Masanobu that makes me very very happy.

In his satirical and playful style 大僧都觀正法印謹白" (Daisōzu Kan Shō Hōin Kinpaku) Courtesans Takigawa and Hanaogi at Yoshiwara Gate" (from The Autographs of Yoshiwara Beauties series) by Kitao Masanobu (or Santō Kyōden) are saying that : "Respectfully declared by the Great Prelate Kan Shō, Dharma Seal".

But, what more?I am very very intrigued for the inscriptions here I roughly understand. Any hint?

Thank you in advance,
Renato

Congratulations on your print! Wish I could help. Actually I am curious about what I was assuming is part of the date in the cartouche, which to me looks like it includes only the second half of a lunar year (卯). But when I look this print up on ukiyo-e.org, I see that the versions of this print collected there are exactly the same and that there is no character missing above 卯. Does that mean that this character is not intended to reference a lunar year but something else instead?

Right side,
Eureka, inscriptions read from left to right !
春風春水一時來
Shunpu shunsui ichiji ni kitaru
Spring breezes and spring waters come at once
はる立というばかりに やみよしのゝ山も霞て けさはみゆらん 瀧川
Haru tatsu to iu bakari ni, Miyoshino no yama mo
kasumite、kesa miyuran, Takigawa
Even though it has just become spring the mountains of Miyoshino are in haze, they cannot be seen this morning, Takigawa

That's good enough for now.

Regards,
I.Nagy

wOW, I missed that. Thank you very much, Mr. Nagy. Thats very kind of you!

How I loved this piece! I bought it on a travel. I know some online auction house like the wonderful Artelino use to sell online, but I love to see what I am buying. So, next step is the great Japan next year! I can't wait to step in Yamada Shoten,Sakai Koukodou, Hara Shobo and buy some bautiful ukiyo-e and surimono like this!

If you need something, please, let me know!
Warm regards
Renato
