Hello,

I would like to find out the name of the artist who made these Japanese Satsuma Shishi vases. Thanks.

BL

Dear BL ,

In addition to the circular cross symbol (the mon associated with Satsuma), the image shows the stylized kanji "薩 摩" Satsuma.

As you may know, these are equivalents to a place stamp, they do not identify an individual artist. They indicate regional origin: Satsuma”, the historical domain in southern Kyūshū. On ceramics, this functions exactly like "Satsuma ware" or a “Product of Satsuma”, whose artists are not individually named.

Best regards,
Renato Araújo
