Subject:Antique Japanese Room Divider Screens
Posted By: John Butler Sat, Feb 14, 2026 IP: 172.59.162.96

We are told these are several hundred years old. They were brought back from Japan about sixty years ago. We don't have room to display them in our current home and want to find someone who can evaluate them. One of the screens is part of a two-screen continuous set, there are four screens in all, each has six panels that are about five feet high, each panel about 19-20 inches wide.

Hi John,

I'm afraid I can't be of much help myself in terms of evaluating the screens, but I thought I'd mention a few things you might try -- it sort of sounds like you are looking to sell these items, since you mention that you don't have room for them right now. Asian Art Week is coming up in March, so you might consider contacting a few auctions houses to see if they can tell you something about these. Bonham's and Freeman's both come to mind, you might consider Christie's and Sotheby's as well if you think they are very valuable.

If you happen to be near the San Francisco Bay area, you might also consider reaching out to a place called Iwasawa Oriental Art (https://japaneseartandantiques.com/contact/) who may be able to offer some evaluation services. I have never used them myself so I can't comment on how it works with them.

Hope that's helpful, good luck with this.
