Subject:Chinese Scroll Painting with Magpies 230.68
Posted By: Chelsea Thu, Apr 02, 2026 IP: 76.238.198.207

Hi again,

Like the last, I have zero leads on this painting. Google translate led me through some potential artist names but none panned out. As always, I am incredibly grateful for the help!

Thank you,
Chelsea

The crows cry on the river as the moon grows dim,
The wind stirs the lingering haze, the green ribbons of verdure stretch long,
The most unbearable thing to hear is from the flute
Flowers fall on the old palace walls of Baimen.
The green pond is filled with fallen petals at dawn, though I cannot hold back the east wind.
Only because spring's days are numbered to move the
verdant vines along the stream.

In the Early Spring of the Year of Metal-Rabbit (1531) by Baiyang Shanren Wu Xiang

Seal,
白洋山人 Baiyang Shanren

Wu Xiang 吴湘 (Year of birth and death unknown)
a native of Yin County, Zhejiang Province during the Ming Dynasty,
Active during the Jiajing reign、
courtesy name Baiyang, was the son of Wu Shiyong. He excelled in painting figures, insects, and flowers, initially learning from his father, and later studying under Lu Zhen 盧鎭 of Fenghua, his brushwork closely resembling his style. He was a man of distinctive character, and also proficient in poetry and prose...

We’ve identified the painter, and the signature and seal match; the only question now is whether the painting itself could be 500 years old ?
It doesn't look that old in the photo.

I.Nagy

Wow, thank you for the translation! The scroll is certainly not 500 years old. I think it was made sometime closer to the mid 20th century. Just to clarify, according to the information on the scroll, Baiyang Shanren is the painter and Wu Xiang is the poet?

You've been instrumental in figuring out these scrolls, thank you very much.

Same person,
白洋山人 吴湘 Bayang Wu Xiang
"Bayang" was his courtesy name to which "Shanren" (Hermit) was added to form his pseudonym - "Bayang the Hermit"
Wu was his surname and Xiang was his given name.
