From the Series of Eight Views of Environs of Edo
Azuma Shrine and Forest
Night Rain

Here are my rough translations of the three mad poems.

Will it not emerge from the roots of the camphor tree that turned to stone,
the sound of the night rain in the grove of Azuma Shrine ?
Kanninsha Nijimori
(Pseudonym of Kitada Mankichi, kyōka poet, active in the Bunsei era)

I wish I had borrowed a willow straw raincoat from Yanagishima,
oh, spring rain falling in the middle of the night on.
Suichōdō

Was it the time when I woke up,
The sacred fence of the Azuma Shrine was battered
hundred times by the humid night rain.
Shōbaitei Akindo
(Waka and haikai poet, active from late Edo to early Meiji period)
