Subject:Help to identify three japanese woodblocks
Posted By: jean-gabriel Tue, Apr 14, 2026 IP: 90.70.45.6

Hello,
I have these three japanese woodblocks in my collection. Obviously, these prints come from an ehon. They have a rather primitive style. I would very much like to identify the story they illustrated and, if possible, find out the title of the book and the author of these prints. Thank you in advance for any help. best

All three prints are pages from the same e-hon. The theme of the e-hon is the Genpei Wars (a 12th century conflict in which the Minamoto clan overthrow the ruling Taira clan before establishing Japan's first shogunate in Kamakura.
In unavailability of the e-hon's title and colophon, we cannot learn anything more about it.
It is probably from the late Edo period.

The theme of the prints based on the interpretation of the inscriptions.

Pic.1,
This print shows the final decisive naval battle of Dan-no-Ura

Pic.2,
This print depicts Taira no Tadanori (also known as Satsuma-no-kami Tadanori) before he was caught by Okabe Rokuyata Tadazumi, a samurai from Musashi, but Tadanori, with the "great strength and swift movements" he had honed in the mountains and fields of Kumano, quickly overpowered his enemy.

Pic.3,
This print shows a discussion of the Hiyodorigoe strategy when Minamoto no Yoshitsune's forces launched a legendary surprise attack from the steep mountains (Hiyodorigoe) behind the enemy Taira camp.It is known as the "reverse charge" in "The Tale of the Heike," and this single attack threw the Heike army into disarray, leading to a
great victory for the Minamoto clan.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for the information. Might there be any stylistic clues that could help identify the artist, or at least the school they belonged to? The drawing style seems rather primitive to me.

Another point (which has nothing to do with the subject): this is the first time I have used this site, and I am unable to see the replies to my posts on the site, although I can see the number of replies displayed and I receive them by email. Is this normal? Also, I found the notification in my spam folder, which is why it took me some time to reply to you.

Kind regards.
