Subject:Help to identify this primitive woodblock
Posted By: jean-gabriel Thu, Apr 16, 2026 IP: 90.70.45.6

Hello, could someone help me identify this primitive print (in very poor condition)? Who is the actor depicted? Which scene from which play? Who is the artist? Thank you in advance.

I made a mistake. The image of the name of the actor is the wrong one. Here the correct scan.

The artist is Torii Kiyonaga (鳥居清長, 1752-1805) depicting the actor Nakamura Sukegorō II (中村助五郎, 1745-1805) as 'Nanba no Rokurō' in the kaomise play 'Ima o Sakari Suehiro Genji', performed at the Nakamuraza, 11th month 1768.

Must be one of the earliest prints by Kiyonaga (in accordance with this specific signature).

Hello, thank you very much! Impressive! Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to find the exact title and date of the play simply from the actor’s name? Is the scene depicted very specific and identifiable? Or is there a similar print catalogued somewhere? Kind regards.
