Subject:Chinese Scroll Chen Hongshou - 230.213
Posted By: Chelsea Tue, Apr 21, 2026 IP: 76.238.198.207

Hello!

Started working on a new batch of scrolls. This one is labeled "Chen Hongshou" at the rod finial. This corroborates with the Google translate of the calligraphy: "戊辰夏九月上澣至日 A day in the first ten days of the summer, the ninth month, in the year of Wuchen. 陳鴻壽 Chen Hongshou"

From what I see, there are two Chen Hongshou artists. This piece could possibly be 19th century, Wuchen years so maybe 1808, but I don't see a matching seal. Anyone able to translate the seals?

It also could be after the 16th century artist? Or possibly after the later one and made to look older.

Thanks!
Chelsea

Upper seal,
陳伯子 Chen Bozi (Elder brother Chen)
Lower seal,
鴻壽 Hongshou

Both seals were used by Chen Hongshou 陳鴻壽 1768-1822.
They can be found in the 中國書畫家印鑑款識/文物出版社 上海 2007, p. 1088

The other Chen Hongshou's (1598-1652) name is written with different characters (陳洪綬).

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you so much! You've been so helpful with this process! I looked up the book you cited and found a set for a reasonable price, I may go ahead and purchase it. Thanks again
